The clients had an amazing garden, but it was strange and uncomfortable squeezing out through the small French doors past the corner kitchen to enjoy it.
They wanted to bring the outdoors in and they wanted to have a bigger and more graceful living space.
The solution was a modest 12m2 extension. We extended the lean-to at the back of the house and created a galley kitchen with floor to ceiling cabinets on both sides. Adjoining those we had a bench dedicated to easy access appliances on one side, and a dedicated cooking bench to the other. An entertainers’ island allowed ‘the cook’ to prepare meals for friends and be part of the conversation. Four meter wide bi-folding timber doors created a barrier-free view and effortless transition to the deck and on to the garden.
New flooring was spliced into the existing Matai, and all the floors were sanded. We painted the same neutral colour to all the walls. The junctions from old to new were seamless. We ran new energy efficient LED lighting throughout, and skylights brought even more natural light.
The difference was transformational. What was a dark room with no room to move became a bright open and flowing space.
